The Myriad World

2021

Shanghai,China

Inspired by the symbolism of the Buddhist Patchwork Robe (Baina Yi), this work is composed of leftover textile and painting materials collected throughout my creative process. By reusing these fragments, the piece reflects the Buddhist idea of embracing diversity, imperfection, and interconnectedness.

Its colour palette is based on the dynamic interactions of the Yin–Yang and Five Elements (Wu Xing) philosophy, particularly the cycles of mutual restraint, where opposing forces generate movement, transformation, and continuous change. Through these relationships, the work evokes the ever-evolving nature of the myriad world.

Materials: Cotton fabric, linen, cotton thread, plant-dyed cotton fabric, rust-dyed fabric, natural mineral pigments, and acrylic paint.

Techniques: Hand embroidery, French knot embroidery, machine stitching, rust dyeing, and mixed textile techniques.
